Goaltenders absorb enough punishment from pucks fired in anger during games, so they don’t much appreciate a new welt imparted by a teammate in a morning skate. The Lightning’s Olaf Kolzig and Mike Smith each took hard shots high off...

Tampa Bay Lightning goalie Mike Smith missed Sunday's game with New Jersey because of an undisclosed lower-body injury. Olaf Kolzig replaced Smith, who is listed as day to day. The Lightning recalled goalie Karri Ramo from Norfolk of the AHL to serve as Kolzig's backup. Tampa Bay also brought up defenseman Jamie Heward from Norfolk. Tampa Bay left wing Gary Roberts (upper body) and center Chris Gratton...

If I gave you 30 or so guesses as to which team's goaltending has improved the most this season, it'd be pretty interesting to see just how far down the Lightning were on that list. Mike Smith, and to a lesser extent Olaf Kolzig, have transformed the way Tampa Bay is losing games this season, so much so that the Lightning have the most improved save percentage of any team in the league. I wonder how...

So it was a real case of cognitive dissonance to see this sight last night at Verizon Center. Yes, it's Olaf Kolzig, not in a Washington Capitals jersey, but in a Tampa Bay Lightning jersey. No more Olie the Goalie...

Coming into this hockey season, Brent Johnson was even more of an afterthought than usual. After leaving Johnson in the press box to watch games and leaving him on the bench to watch practices at the end of last season in favor of Olaf Kolzig and Christobal Huet, the Caps replaced those two aging starters with former NHL MVP Jose Theodore. Johnson battled through training camp to regain his NHL backup...

I love it when a good prognostication comes together. Let’s get this out of the way right off the bat. The Caps played about eight minutes of superior hockey tonight. The rest was, well…not. But it was good enough for a 4-2 win over Tampa Bay in Olaf Kolzig’s return to Verizon Center. Perhaps it was the circumstances – the subplots to this game and all (Kolzig’s return, Alex Ovechkin’s goal drought,...

In the 1990s, Brent Johnson was a terrific starting goalie for the St. Louis Blues. He led a good team, stopped the shots he had to stop and won more than he lost. He set a (since broken) playoff shutout record. At that time, the Capitals had a great starting goalie of their own named Olaf Kolzig. Towering over other NHL goalies of the day at 6'3", Kolzig wore the nickname Zilla with pride, even getting...

from Lightning Strikes, It is going to be an interesting evening Monday when the Lightning faces the Capitals at the Verizon Center and Olaf Kolzig faces his former teammates. Kolzig has never been shy about saying how emotional was his breakup with Washington, with which he played 16 seasons. But Kolzig, classy as always, said all the right things about his former employer. “I still wish it hadn’t...

"Tampa Bay is eager to shed salary and Lightning general manager Brian Lawton is fielding interest in any number of players, including veteran goaltender Olaf Kolzig and forward Radim Vrbata. "Kolzig makes $1.5 million this season and may soon become an affordable option for those teams in need of a goaltender." - Darren Dreger, TSN.ca
