Less than 24 hours after Jaromir Jagr was told that the Rangers couldn't wait any longer to try to negotiate a new deal, the 36-year-old Czech right winger signed a lucrative two-year contract to play for Avangard Omsk, a Russian team that is part of the new Continental Hockey League.

Continuing a sweeping roster transformation, the Rangers yesterday signed free-agent left wing Markus Naslund, who played for the Vancouver Canucks for 12 years, to a two-year, $8-million deal and bolstered their defense with former Buffalo Sabre Dmitri Kalinin, who agreed to a one-year deal.

It was a 2-for-2, two defensemen for two forwards, but it doesn't take a math major to figure out that the trade between the Columbus Blue Jackets and the Rangers yesterday was not the last numbers-crunching that the Rangers brass will be doing. More signings and trades are a certainty.
