Ben Spies led the first session of free practice at Misano for the World Superbike class, but he took his time to get there. The Ten Kate Honda riders led the way early, all three sitting atop the timesheets at the halfway mark, but Michel Fabrizio, Nori Haga and Ben Spies gradually caught up. Superpole 1 Ben Spies was fastest at the start, going out and setting two fast laps from the off. Fabrizio followed Spies example, but was forced out of 2nd by Jakub Smrz with 3 minutes left. With just a few seconds of the session left, Jamie Hacking put in a blistering lap to take provisional pole. Shane Byrne crashed early, but had already set a fast enough lap to qualify, though he had to run back...

Stepping up from one series to another as champion can be very hard. Just ask Brendan Roberts.
