Johnny Rea was the fastest rider in the final session of free practice ahead of this afternoon's Superpole. The Irishman was over a tenth quicker than Michel Fabrizio and Carlos Checa, with Shane Byrne another couple of tenths behind Checa. Johnny Rea held on to provisional pole during the second session of qualifying for the World Superbike class at Portimao. Rea improved his time to finish ahead of Ducati's Michel Fabrizio and Aprilia's Max Biaggi, while Jakub Smrz completes the provisional front row. Noriyuki Haga took four tenths off his time from QP1 to leapfrog ahead of Ben Spies, who could not improve on the time he set yesterday....

Jonny Rea set the fastest time on the final session of practice, snatching the top time away from Ben Spies at the very end of the session. Spies finished ahead of the two Ducatis of Michel Fabrizio and Noriyuki Haga, Fabrizio within a few hundredths, Haga half a second back. With barely time to recover from the shock news that reigning 250 World Champion Marco Simoncelli was testing an Aprilia RSV4 World Superbike machine at Mugello, with an eye to competing in this weekend's WSBK round at Imola, motorcycle racing fans have more to deal with.
