WIGAN, England – The outcome was so embarrassing that Wigan's players want to refund the cost of tickets to their fans. Wigan was routed 9-1 by Tottenham on Sunday, matching a league record for most goals scored by a team in a game. Jermain Defoe had five of Tottenham's eight goals in the second half at White Hart Lane . "We feel that as a group of players we badly let down our supporters

LONDON – Jermain Defoe scored five goals, including a seven-minute hat trick, to match a Premier League record in powering Tottenham to a 9-1 rout of Wigan on Sunday. Defoe equaled the mark set by Newcastle's Alan Shearer in 1999 and Manchester United's Andy Cole in 1995. "It did cross my mind whether I was going to get another (hat trick)," Defoe said. "I had another good chance

I'd been struggling with the damn internet connection all day, when I finally managed to log on to the BBC sport's "Sunday's football as it happens" section. 1 - 0 was the score at White Hart Lane at half time, nothing unusual about that I thought. What a mistake. Tottenham came out firing in the second half, and the next time I checked, a mere half-an-hour later, the scorline was 7 - 1....

Wigan's manager, Roberto Martínez, wears stylish pointy tan shoes on the touchline and his side strive for all good things continental. They will soon be serving croissants and expresso in the refreshment outlets rather than meat pies. But if the style is undeniable, the goals are lacking; six in as many games at home will not keep the supporters drooling. Wigan, in front of barely 16,000,...

After their tribulations at Roma in midweek, Fulham will settle for this draw quite happily. A match between two mid-table teams with limited goalscoring capacity always had the makings of an even encounter, and so it proved with Clint Dempsey's penalty for Fulham cancelling out Emmerson Boyce's opener for Wigan. They were offering 5% off in the club shop for every Wigan goal, but it was a bit early...

Chelsea lost their 100 percent start to the season following a 3-1 defeat to Wigan Athletic at the DW Stadium. Titus Bramble headed the hosts in front after 16 minutes before Didier Drogba steered in the equaliser at the start of the second period. The game took a dramatic turn a minute later when Petr Čech was given a straight red card for bringing down Hugo Rodallega as he charged through on...

With a red card for his goalkeeper and an injury to his most impressive defender, Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti’s flawless entrée to English football ended in a 3-1 defeat at Wigan yesterday. Petr Cech received a straight red card for lunging foot-first into a one-on-one with Hugo Rodallega. Wigan’s domineering forward converted to make the score 2-1 and with Chelsea down to nine...

Chelsea lost their first Premier League game of the season earlier, going down 3-1 to Wigan Athletic at the JW Stadium. I didn't see the game, but by all accounts Wigan deserved to take all three points. It was the Latics' first win against one of the top four sides at the 35th time of asking. The goals (see videos below) came from Titus Bramble in the 16th minute before Didier Drogba equalized just...
