While I have been working on my account of my time in the Atlanta Attack front office (the eagerly awaited "The Soccerball Years, part 2") several prominent citizens of my home town have decided to throw caution (and a lot of cash) to the wind and invest heavily in new professional soccer franchises. Investing in a professional soccer club in Atlanta is not for the weak of heart. I've recently...

David Fellerath over at Triangle Offense has the bad news that Red Bull New York have exercised their option on Mac Kandji , who the RailHawks acquired the rights to after the Atlanta Silverbacks had folded. While the RailHawks are technically entitled to the transfer fee, reported to be around $150K, it appears that the real beneficiary will likely be former Silverbacks' owner Boris Jerkunica (and...

Canada.com is reporting that the Cleveland City Stars, who won the USL-2 title last season, are moving up to USL-1 in 2009. It’s as if there’s promotion and relegation in American soccer. Who knew? So with the Seattle Sounders moving to MLS and the Atlanta Silverbacks suspending operations, the Cleveland City Stars and the Austin Aztex [...]

One of the most interesting stories of the past USL-MLS season has been the transfer saga of Mac Kandji from the Atlanta Silverbacks to Red Bull New York. At first it appeared that the menacing Silverbacks forward from Senegal was going to be sold to Red Bull NY, but the deal was quashed apparently by MLS . Eventually Atlanta worked out a loan deal that did allow Kandji to join the New York MLS squad...

One of the stories lost in the midst of the New York Red Bulls improbable MLS Cup run is the circumstances surrounding Mac Kandji's future. As you learned earlier in the week, the Atlanta Silverbacks will not operate a team in 2009, a development that left Kandji's future up in the air since Atlanta still held Kandji's rights during his loan to the Red Bulls. In a rather shrewd bit of business, Atlanta...

Yesterday, the Atlanta Silverbacks of the USL First Division announced that the club will not field a USL-1 team for 2009, citing both the economy and the possibility of an MLS expansion club coming to Atlanta in 2011. Let’s just say this up front — the MLS expansion excuse is complete and utter horseshit. The Seattle [...]
