Two embarassing results for Majore League Soccer in the CONCACAF Champions League happened yesterday. Last years MLS Cup runners up and the Western Conference champions both dropped out of the regional tournament yesterday. The New England Revolution lost 0-4 at home to Joe Public of Trinidad and Tobago. This was the first time a Caribbean [...]

The Montreal Impact continue to do just enough to advance in the CONCACAF Champions League, advancing to the group stage with a 0-0 draw against Nicaraguan champion Real Esteli yesterday. Montreal won the two game total goal series 1-0. The game was held in Honduras because Nicaragua didn't have an appropriate venue (which says all you really need to know about the quality of Esteli). Montreal Impact scorer Joey Gjertsen potted the goal that put our team past the Nicaraguan squad for the NA version of the Champions' League. Just another ho-hum moment in the exciting life of Mr. Gjertsen apparently. Consider this to be proof of the further erosion of the art of fist pumping, which was taken to new depths last year when Anna Ivanovic pioneered the mini-pump .

That thunderous sound heard around the Triangle this evening may very well have be the Montreal Impact hammering home the nails in the coffin of the RailHawks 2008 playoff hopes as they took a 2-0 victory over the listless RailHawks at WakeMed Soccer Park. After a 2 hour rain delay, the RailHawks were afforded a golden opportunity to claw their way back into the USL-1 playoff race when Montreal's Pizzolito...

So the CONCACAF Champions League was background noise on my TV last night. The first game was often relegated to a pic-in-pic window, as I found myself more interested in a World Series of Poker final table on ESPN. (I’ve got that damn poker bug again. Winning a tournament in Las Vegas does that, I [...]
