In only 7.3 overs possible before lunch Adam Lyth made a 10-ball duck - bowled by Jason Lewry - and after having to start his innings three times, number three Anthony McGrath eventually went in the afternoon for three off the bowling of Robin Martin-Jenkins.

Gale did add two more conventional boundaries, square of the wicket, but at the other end his partners were kept quiet by a typically economical Jason Lewry, who conceded seven runs in four overs and picked up the only wicket as well - that of Adam Lyth, who played down the wrong line to an outswinger and lost his off stump for a 10-ball duck.
