For the purposes of this exercise, you may choose...

King of Rock Steady dies

It's only two months since I had the pleasure of seeing Alton Ellis, the King or Godfather of Rocksteady, at the Jazz Cafe, but now he's dead, aged 70. (See The Vinyl Word August 11 and my photo below). This was apparently his last appearance and we were unaware that he was suffering from lymphatic cancer. It was a thoroughly enjoyable show and I'm glad I had a chance to see him one more time, but...

Alton Ellis: Jamaican singer known as the Godfather of Rocksteady

Alton Ellis was regarded by many connoisseurs as the most consummate Jamaican vocalist of the 1960s, when he recorded some masterful records in the ska and rocksteady styles which preceded reggae. With his powerful, yearning voice he also had a particular gift for taking American soul and R&B songs and giving them a uniquely Jamaican character.

Alton Ellis R.I.P.

Reggae star Alton Ellis, known as “the Godfather of rocksteady”, has died at the age of 70. The Jamaican-born singer, who moved to Britain in the 1970s, achieved fame with a number of hits, including I’m Still in Love and I’m Just a Guy. He was a leading pioneer of the more laid-back “rocksteady” sound, which came out of Jamaica in the 1960s. Ellis was still performing until August this year, when...
