I’ve been reading Andrew Marr’s A History of Modern Britain, which I recommend wholeheartedly, and apart from reflecting on how much harder politics was in the aftermath of the War than it is now (devaluation, Rhodesia, Vietnam, borrowing money, strikes, inflation - all in 1968) I also wondered what happened to the censoriat - the [...]

Next Wednesday at CERN, the giant multinational centre for nuclear research at Geneva, the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) will be switched on. The BBC has got itself into a bit of a lather about this, turning over large chunks of Radio 4's schedules to the event and sending Andrew Marr to broadcast on-the-spot reports, but so far hasn't explained in very great detail what it is we're supposed...

I posted this back in May when John Prescott came up with a strange analogy to defend Gordon Brown's sullen demeanour on the Andrew Marr show : "When you get on an aeroplane, do you go and look in the cockpit to see if the pilot is smiling" . Now Jack Straw has come out with this: "The question for the country is who is better to take us through this turbulent period? "Is it an experienced...

On the BBC Not Andrew Marr Show Mr Jack Straw today said that for 10 years our economy had performed better than the world average. This was a deliberate lie. World average growth has been about 5%, ours has averaged 2.5%. The BBC interviewer naturally never called him on it.

I wonder if Jack Straw really believes this ........ Justice Secretary Jack Straw has said Labour is best placed to see Britain through the current economic downturn. He told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show that economic management under Labour would help the UK to "weather these storms".He said Chancellor Alistair Darling did not speak out of turn saying economic conditions were the worst...

Further to my blog about the splits appearing between Gordon Brown and Alistair Darling does need updating. Now Jack Straw has appeared on the BBC's Andrew Marr Show and the interview is reported by the BBC thus: "Justice Secretary Jack Straw has said Labour is best placed to see Britain through the current economic downturn. He told BBC One's Andrew Marr Show that economic...

Speaking on The Andrew Marr Show, on BBC One, Mr Straw said that the Cabinet was completely in step. Mr Darling had been referring to the worldwide impact of the credit crunch and soaring food prices, Mr Straw emphasised. “The message from Gordon, from Alistair, from colleagues like myself has been the same,” the Justice Secretary said. “We have had a very good period of economic success,...

And if there was any doubt about it, he added on the Andrew Marr Show: "Do you want me to use any other language? I've just said yes, there won't be a leadership challenge, from me or from anybody else and I'm clear about that."

The Scottish Liberal Democrats are relevant to UK politics, but, like, the English Liberal Democrats, mainly reputed for their street politics. Tavish Scott seems to be talking a good street game while actually re-arranging the deckchairs on the Titanic. This is a shame. Two of the greatest assets of the Lib Dems are located in Scotland. One of them, Sir Menzies Campbell, was on the Andrew Marr...
