After Daisuke Matsuzaka notched his 11th victory of the season last night in Seattle, it might be interesting to sneak a preliminary gander at the American League Cy Young Award race. As early as it is, this is typically the time of year where a handful of guys have begun to separate themselves [...]

The piece of paper had more than a dozen itemized rules, and Edinson Volquez was asked to sign it in spring training of 2007, agreeing to the conditions during his stay in the minor leagues. Going from the majors to high Single-A Bakersfield was demoralizing and a long way from when Volquez was rated the Rangers' No. 1 prospect by Baseball America in 2006.

I don't think it's unreasonable... to argue that CC Sabathia is now the front-runner for the NL Cy Young award. That's at the top of today's Sporting News column . ...To keep covering the Brett Favre story if it's going to continue having weird plot twists like Roger Goodell stepping in and Donovan McNabb getting involved. ...For Josh Childress to escape the Hawks and flee to the sunny money...

... told the Associated Press. So, let's ask the question, right now: Can a pitcher earn a league's Cy Young Award pitching only a half-season in the league? Why not'In fact, for the month of the July, Sabathia, the 2007 AL Cy Young Award winner, is arguably the MVP in the National League. "He's got unbelievable stuff," Milwaukee catcher Jason Kendall said. "That's a good team over there."In...

You may want to consider adding Mike Marshall's 1974 Cy Young year to your list. While not strictly a "closer", entering 106 games and pitching 208 innings in relief (with 21 saves) is as mind-boggling now as it was then. Back when relievers were given the Firemen of the Year Award, he did the work of two whole firehouses and a squad of pumper trucks. -- Mike, Rye, N.Y.

... E.R.A. down around the 3.00 mark, could we possibly be talking about Mussina (dare I say it') as a Cy Young candidate?Neither team was able to push a run across until the bottom of the 5th, when the Twins were just begging the Yankees to get on the board. With runners on first and second with one out, Jose Molina grounded into what should have been an easy double play ball, but Twins 2B...

According to Dan Graziano of the Newark Star-Ledger: Roy Halladay is apparently unhappy in Toronto and has let management know it, and management has apparently responded by doing some quiet surveying of teams (such as St. Louis and the Dodgers) that are far, far away from the AL East in an effort to see what it could get for the 2003 Cy Young Award winner. Apparently, the returns other teams...
