Individual Goals For Average

We can calculate individual goals against averages and we can also calculate individual goals for averages. When a player is on the ice in a 5 on 5 situation and his team scores he gets credited with a goal for (even if he doesn't score or assist on it). This is another sabermetric method to find the best offensive players in the game. The statistic is somewhat team and situation dependent.

Since players will play different roles on their teams, different players will share ice time with different quality of linemates. Some players will play with better linemates than others. This will show up in their +/- rating. Players who play with better quality

Addressing the goalies

Last season, when the NHL rolled out new Reebok uniforms, the "upgrade" flopped. They were too tight. They ripped. Sweat rolled off the jerseys and drained into gloves and skates.

Goalers in a dangerous time; Mike Toth's minority report

There was always a racial element to how Ray Emery was treated in the court of public opinion that the media was reluctant to even acknowledge. It sucked that those with a larger platform didn't think to correct, say, callers to The Team 1200 or letter writers would go on about his "bling," his tattoos or the ex-Sens goalie being "a rap singer on blades." The situation was begging for a reasoned

What Next?

There’s been much discussion this week about adding bans on motorcycles to NHL contracts. Some thoughts from Hugh Adami via Canwest News: And, if a motorcycling ban was put into place, where does the NHL draw the line the next time something bad happens to a player involved in an activity that isn’t prohibited? What if avid golfer Daniel Alfredsson is bopped in the head by an errant golf ball and misses...

SN Awards As A Predictor Of NHL Hardware

By now you've no doubt seen that Alex Ovechkin was named Sporting News Hockey Player of the Year (as voted by his peers) and that he and Mike Green were named to the publication's All-Star team. You might have also seen that the Sporting News named Mike Babcock its Coach of the Year and handed Patrick Kane its Rookie of the Year (again, peer-voted). Does this make it any more or less likely
