David White submits: Using the S&P 500 SPDR ETF (SPY) as a measure, the stock market has lost ground from a high approximately $156 to a current low of about $90. This is 42% of its value. I know we have some problems, but has essentially every stock become 42% less valuable? Complete Story »

David White submits: Energy is generally down in a down market right now. Virtually all solar stocks have gone down in sympathy with this downtrend. If this trend is still in place, why buck it? There has to be a good reason. In LDK Solar (LDK), there does seem to be such a reason (or many such reasons). Its 52 week low was $19.64. However, that was when there was still substantial negative sentiment...

The SF Chronicle’s David White quotes unnamed sources as claiming Raiders head coach Lane Kiffin has only a “50/50 chance” of remaining employed after today’s trip to Kansas City. This has nothing to do with a potential 0-2 start, team officials say. This is about Kiffin’s perceived insubordination over the past seven months. He has continually [...]

David White submits: In 2005, Congress approved the Energy Policy Act that mandates the use of ethanol in gasoline. The level was 4.7 billion gallons of ethanol for 2007. This will rise to 7.5 billion gallons in 2012. In fact, President Bush was pressing for an extension of this mandate to 35 billion gallons of ethanol by 2017. At first people thought this was a great idea for something to replace...

SFGate.com’s David White reports that Al Davis is unhappy that LaMont Jordan has signed with the New England Patriots. Jordan’s time in Oakland can be considered disappointing at best and a complete waste at worst, so it shouldn’t matter where he goes. As a free agent in 2005, his abilities had become overrated whilst serving [...]

David White submits: Money is already tight in virtually all areas. Trying to combat inflation by raising interest rates would only further tighten the money supply. Of course, the Fed can supply money in other ways, but that would not compensate for the contraction due to interest rate increases. The economy is on the verge of collapse. The huge oil price run up is reminiscent of the run up in the...

David White submits: Many of the solar stocks are now quite decently priced, and they are showing strength. The S&P500 recently returned to its low of 1250. Yet stocks such as LDK Solar (LDK), ReneSola (SOL), and Solarfun Power (SOLF) are significantly above their year lows. This is a good sign for the industry. Still, these stocks are significantly off their more recent highs, so they look like bargains...
