... His 774 earned runs above a freely available replacement pitcher is in the same class as Don Drysdale, Whitey Ford and Juan Marichal. But corrections must be made before certifying Mussina as worthy of Cooperstown. First, to compare Mussina properly to modern pitchers, the environment he pitched in must be taken into account. It has been easier for pitchers today to excel than those of earlier...

... closely at it, and there the names were—Sandy Koufax, Frank Howard, Ron Fairly, Claude Osteen, Don Drysdale, Willy Davis… I brought it to my Dad’s friend, who was Egyptian—he’d bought the house, so the ball was his property. He looked at the ball with great distaste, and then had an idea, and said… “Do you want this thing? Take it! It is yours!” 3. The hardest pieces I have ever played are...

... lessons — the hitters of today (and of 1998) would not be able to survive the likes of Bob Gibson, Don Drysdale, Satchel Paige, etc. For me — the following is the quintessential dividing line between “old school” — “golden age” “classic” whichever you wish — and “new school” baseball. This is akin to Hannibal at Cannae. He won the battle, but also lost the war.

... Or a better comp — Curt Schilling and Randy Johnson of the 2001 Diamondbacks. Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale of the Dodgers in the ’60s. Of course, the Mets can get to the postseason without having two aces in the rotation. My point is that it is really hard not to be successful when you have dominating pitchers taking the ball two out of every five days — no matter who is in your bullpen...

The Phillies are three victories from their first parade since 1980. And tonight, in the Phillies' first World Series home game since 1993, the hometown kid gets the start."It's something that I've been dreaming about my whole life," he said. He's not a kid, not at 45, the oldest player in the major leagues. He has pitched more innings than Don Drysdale, Juan Marichal or Carl Hubbell, yet this...

On the occasion of Game 1 of the 2008 World Series, Dodger Thoughts reader Bigcpa was kind enough to pass along the rarely heard Don Drysdale call of the Kirk Gibson's homer in Game 1 of the 1988 World Series.

Anyone who goes to Dodger Stadium or pays much attention to the team has probably heard Vin Scully's call of Kirk Gibson's pinch-hit home run in the 1988 World Series a zillion times. But Dodger Thoughts has posted of the late Don Drysdale making the call on radio. Nice to hear Drysdale again, and at probably his most excited ever. Be prepared for 90-plus seconds of pure crowd noise.
