It's to find a way, with precious little to spend, to improve a roster that has plenty of openings. The Mavericks could have up to eight spots available by the end of the month. Nelson, the...

• Let me start by saying this is not a criticism of DeSagana Diop. He is a nice player, and the Mavericks are a better team with him than without him. But if the club uses its mid-level exception to bring Diop back into the fold, if this is the free-agent move Donnie Nelson says the club can't afford to miss on, what does it say about the team's upcoming season? It says the Mavericks...

The trend started Thursday in the NBA draft. On Friday, it continued. "Shooting," Donnie Nelson said, "is the operative skill." The Mavericks put the meat of their summer-league team together Friday and it's packed with shooters. One of them is Shan Foster, who they took with the 51st pick Thursday. Joining him is a collection of deadeyes – some rookies and some who have solid NBA experience....

Mark Cuban loves a competitor, and will give Donnie Nelson the green light to make the move necessary to put in position to lead this team to a championship. DB.com’s Mike Fisher recently spoke to Dallas Mavericks GM Donnie Nelson about the team’s “Big 3″ of Dirk Nowitzki, Jason Kidd and Josh Howard. “Look at the two teams in the Finals. In LA, there’s Kobe and a nice supporting cast. In Boston, they have their Big 3. We think there is not a huge or [...]

... "Perception and reality are often different things," president of basketball operations Donnie Nelson said. A lot of people perceived communication as Carlisle's short suit based on the reputation that he built coaching at Detroit and Indiana. But nothing could be further from the truth so far in Dallas. He already has engaged his players on topics outside of basketball. And, of course,...

Donnie Nelson, the team's president of basketball operations, has talked about a system that allows Kidd more room for offensive creativity.
