Gingerbread has been baked in Market Drayton for over 200 years. The first recorded mention is Roland Lateward, maltster, who was baking gingerbread in 1793, but it was probably made much earlier. There's an excellent book you can buy from the museum in Market Drayton called "Shropshire's Spicy Secret" by Meg Prybus (with delightful illustrations by Harry Sales). Apparently the tradition...

Going out of Market Drayton, on the Shrewsbury Road towards Müller Dairy, is Gill's Puddings. This business is run by Kim and Gill Smith. Gill's parents used to run Bennett's farmhouse restaurant (sadly no longer trading) where I had one of the nicest meals I've ever had. This business specialises in making finest quality hand crafted deserts. They supply hotels, restaurants, pubs, coffee shops...

I've always been impressed with markets, when they have to close a road to accomodate it! On Wednesdays Market Drayton changes it's name to Drayton Market (there's also a smaller market on Saturdays). The town's marketplace is ancient, with a market charter granted from 1246. I love the Buttercross market shelter, which replaced an actual cross in 1823. If you visit Market Drayton...

Newsflash - Drayton, you allowed the farm system to be wrecked. It will take a minimum of 3-4 years to rebuild. You have no trading pieces. Therefore, you are totally dependednt on the FA market to compete. That means you have to pay the price to compete until the farm is harvested. You can't talk about championships on one side of your mouth while being unwilling to do what it takes to build...

Brian McTaggart of the Houston Chronicle has the lowdown on the Astros. Again the word "tweak" is thrown around in regard to the Astros' offseason. So I would not expect a major signing or trade. Regarding C.C. Sabathia, owner Drayton McLane said, "That might be way out of our league." The Astros will try to re-sign Randy Wolf and LaTroy Hawkins. It would still make sense to sign a starter if...

Western ignorance of Muslim attitudes to apostasy can have serious consequences for asylum-seeking converts even without their being deported to their home countries. According to reports last weekend, a Libyan Christian convert from Islam was beaten almost to death by Muslims while at West Drayton Removal Centre in the UK. Twenty-eight-year-old Moftah Abdulghani, who had fled Libya after converting...

Well, who'd have thought it? Only a few weeks ago I was bemoaning the lack of honour accorded to this blog's inspiration, Polyolbion poet Michael Drayton, in his home town of Polesworth, and then this turns up in today's Coventry Evening Telegraph. They've wisely decided against spending any of the cash on a one-off recital of his masterwork, but this will do just fine.
