INQUIRER Newsdesk the Inquirer , Thursday 9 October 2008. 09:48:00 Scrapheaped HP SAID it is to cut 3,378 jobs in its UK EDS operations after buying up the company (Electronic Data Systems) last year. The company is culling some 24,600 jobs globally. You have to wonder what EDS was doing that HP wasn't....

A basic notion of Economics 101 says that when vendors in an industry consolidate, prices rise, because there are fewer people selling the products or services in question. So on its face, the $13.9 billion merger of Electronic Data Systems Corp. and Hewlett-Packard should lead to one thing: higher prices for the outsourcing services that EDS provides.
