There will be more than a few surprised people tonight , both in the media and outside it, at the verdict reached by the jury in the "liquid explosives" trial. The case, after all, had been presented, as George Tenet famously said, as a "slam-dunk". Here were 8 Muslim extremists, caught red-handed with quantities of hydrogen peroxide, used by both the 7/7 and 21/7 bombers in their attacks, having recorded...

According to former CIA head George Tenet , "There were many Iraqi officials who said both publicly and privately that Iraq had no WMD." Tenet's statement is accurate. Moreover, there were high level CIA officials who believed Iraq possessed no WMD. In addition, foreign governments stated there was no hard evidence Iraq had WMD, as did the heads of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and...

Saddam Hussein's intelligence czar was a secret agent for Britain's MI6 and he told Western powers that Iraq had no weapons of mass destruction. This information was discarded by then-Central Intelligence Agency director George Tenet because it conflicted with Washington's case for war, a new book claims. - Gareth Porter (Aug 14, '08)

On Hardball today, Mike Barnicle just made a fairly explosive statement. They were talking about Ron Suskind's new book The Way of the World , in which Suskind alleges via interviews with multiple colleagues and subordinates of George Tenet the explosive charge that the Bush Administration gave the CIA an actual paper ordering them to forge a document drawing connections between Al Qaeda and Iraq....

George Bush and George Tenet both deny the allegation leveled by Ron Suskind's new book, The Way of the World , that in late 2003 the White House ordered the CIA to forge and circulate a letter that would seem to justify the invasion of Iraq after the fact. Here is WH deputy press secretary Tony Fratto : "Ron Suskind makes a living from gutter journalism. He is about selling books and making wild...

Ron Suskind’s new book alleges that the White House ordered the CIA to fabricate a link between Iraq and al-Qaida. The CIA director at the time, George Tenet, calls the claim “ridiculous.” Suskind says that’s just an example of “George’s memory issue.” READ THE WHOLE ITEM Related Entries August 4, 2008 White House Fabricated Iraq Intelligence, Book Alleges August 4, 2008 A War of Self-Destruction August...

Ron Suskind was on NPR this morning to discuss his new book The Way of the World , which alleges Iraq's intelligence chief Tahir Jalil Habbush told the US before the war that Iraq had no WMD. NPR asked George Tenet and the White House for comment, and, remarkably enough, they both essentially admitted this was true. SUSKIND: What we now know from this investigation is that a secret mission was conducted...

(Originally posted on DailyKos.) There’s a telling scene near the beginning of The Dark Side, Jane Mayer’s indispensable chronicle of the Bush Administration’s descent into torture and criminality. Shortly after the September 11 attacks, CIA Director George Tenet was advised that that CIA had followed two of the hijackers into the United States in 2000, and then dropped the trail — without alerting...

Second of 25 excerpts from The Dark Side: The Inside Story of How the War on Terror Turned into a War on American Ideals by Jane Mayer: After the attacks of September 11, 2001, it was hard to believe that the news could get any worse for George Tenet or the CIA, the agency he had lead since 1997. But when a team of analysts sorted through masses of cables and electronic communications in a conference...
