Great Plains Energy said Wednesday that it earned $104.6 million in the third quarter, up from $61.8 million a year ago, as the parent company of Kansas City Power & Light closed its acquisition of Aquila Inc. That worked out to earnings per share of 92 cents, up from 72 cents. The average number of shares outstanding increased to 113.9 million from 85.7 million a year ago.
