James Fallows calls out David Mark of the Politico as exhibiting "classic and depressing Beltway 'could be perceived as problematic' style.... Please. If someone thinks certain views are outrageous, then say so. Not that they could be misperceived that way if not fully explained, et cetera." I don't see why America needs journalists like David Mark, or organizations like the Politico....

And here’s one of his regulars: Brainstorm. I’ve not used it yet, but on Fallows’s recommendation alone, I’ve downloaded it for the 30-day free trial. Definitely worth a go, IMHO.

From James Fallows, writing in The Atlantic... The Clinton team doesn't worry about hurting Obama's prospects of winning in the fall, because they assess those prospects at zero. Always have. Obama might not win if he leads a bitterly divided party, but (in this view) he was never going to win. Not a chance. He would [...]

Fallows, a man who pays attention to a multitude of details, credits "reader Rachel" with noticing an unmistakable parallel between Obama's Weslyan graduation speech and another speech delivered by Senator Kennedy years ago. ...Obama was there in place of the ailing Teddy Kennedy. Kennedy had given Obama a huge boost in the legitimacy-and-legacy category by endorsing him, even if it didn't...

James Fallows continues his war against bad hardware and software: > My three computers (MacBook Air saga, cont..): > 1. It's not all bad news out there on the business front. Over this past holiday weekend, Cirrus Design Corporation successfully completed the first 45-minute flight of the company's innovative "The-Jet" (H/T James Fallows ), which is a five-plus-two seat aircraft that many in the aviation industry believe is destined to ignite a revolution in general aviation. Aimed at the market of owner-pilots,...

Coco Wang’s series of Earthquake Strips tells stories of the reactions of ordinary Chinese people to the 12th May earthquake. Panda Panda is my favourite of the ones I’ve read so far, closely followed by Getting A Refund. [Via James Fallows]

This is Beijing on June 20, 2008: [Photo Credit: James Fallows] That is how it will look again about the first of October. In the meantime it will get better. China has undoubtedly made great efforts to improve Beijing’s air quality. As has been noted, given the city’s breakneck development, without these efforts, the situation would be much worse. [...]

Apropos of this recent Foreign Affairs article, James Fallows writes on his Atlantic blog about Beijing's recent decisions -- some inadvertent, some deliberate -- which may end up turning the Olympics "into a source of friction rather than pride for China." Inadvertent ones include: For instance: the embarrassing recent disclosure that the ...

James Fallows has a very interesting post about what it's like to be a foreigner in China, in which he writes: I think I now can explain why, despite the pollution and congestion and overall ceaseless hassle of big-city life in China, I always tell friends or visitors that I "like" Chinese people in general. The reason is that, most of the time, people in China treat me as ... a person....
