Jeff Miller submits: There's gold in them thar hills" (Origin Unknown). Despite the dubious construction and grammar (language buffs can check here ) the statement has a certain ring. The reason is the enduring quality of gold as a store of value. In modern times, this means a value that is impervious to the actions of governments and central bankers. Complete Story »

Jeff Miller submits: We have had some inquiries about our "Gong Model." They say that no one rings a gong at the bottom, so our marketing department thought this was a cool name. This article showed a good description of the last time the Gong sounded. Many traders are seeking "oversold signals" and calling the bottom. Complete Story »

City Manager Jeff Miller is asking to raise the tax rate as his city suffers the steepest decline of property values in Broward County —11.5 percent as of Tuesday. That means owners of nonhomesteaded property and those who bought during the housing boom would probably pay less tax, despite the higher rate. Those who have owned for several years could see increases in their tax bill.

Jeff Miller at Brave New Foundation writes: Over the past several months, as we gathered our staff and began to meet the men and women who have served, we knew that it would be a privilege to be able to share the stories of these service members and their families so that the other 99% of the US population can better understand what is happening to our troops when they return from war....

Jeff Miller submits: Each month we report the results from our payroll employment model. This is not really a forecast. We take a number of different economic indicators from the middle of the preceding month and ask what change in payroll employment is consistent with the other data. The variables are not causally related, but are all different measures of the economy. We get a pretty good fit from...

Jeff Miller submits: Let us suppose a fantasy world in which we could sit down in a game of chance with a select group of opponents. The other players had the following characteristics: They are drawn randomly from the population. If you think you are smart, they are less smart. They have little education in the relevant subject. You have an advanced degree, and they either did not take or do not...

Jeff Miller submits: The diversity of new ETF offerings offers many more choices for the investor. Back in the old days, say a year or two ago (!), only professional traders engaged in short-selling. Only the pros or those with major business interests did commodities trading, and currency speculation or hedging. It is not your father's market.... Complete Story »

Jeff Miller in fine form at "The Curt Jester": The section on loving our enemies is fairly good and is certainly a part of the dialogue about torture. I am reminded of St. Paul writing in the Book of Romans. 'No, "if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals upon his head." Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.'...

Jeff Miller submits: We continue to believe that the Dodd/Shelby housing bill is important for financial stocks and the market as a whole. Tuesday's 83-9 vote on cloture, the Senate process for limiting debate, seemed to signal passage. After the market close yesterday it became apparent that there are additional hurdles, suggesting that the bill will not pass before the July 4th Congressional recess....

The old saying still holds true: imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. Just ask Sen. Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.). He's flattered to pieces (and a little peeved) that Rep. Jeff Miller (R-Fla.) lifted one of his signature speeches nearly word for word. Isakson found out about the plagiarism episode just two weeks ago, after a columnist for the Augusta Chronicle in Georgia brought it to his attention....

Gee. Another day, another rethug doing something sleazy. A Republican congressman has sort of apologized for posting a speech on his website without acknowledging that most of it was written by someone else. Rep. Jeff Miller, R-Naturally., says he did nothing wrong in delivering the heavily borrowed address -- which fellow Republican Sen. John Isakson wrote for his son's high school graduation and...
