It's a rather long article at Salon penned by Juan Cole, but it's one I really recommend reading. The last paragraph: Before he jumps into Afghanistan with both feet, Obama would be well advised to consult with another group of officers. They are the veterans of the Russian campaign in Afghanistan. Russian officers caution that Afghans cannot be conquered, as the Soviets attempted to...

While the presidential candidates debate the success of the surge, they fail to address a couple of issues, says Juan Cole, who offers his help: "I want to weigh in as a social historian of Iraq [emphasis mine] on the controversy over whether the 'surge' 'worked.'" A social historian of Iraq!!!! So that's why he speaks for us all the time. The social historian of Iraq says this about...

Did the surge work? Juan Cole at Informed Comment has an in depth analysis of the facts. The answer is the surge probably had little to do with the changes. Major changes were due to the practice of bribing Sunni tribesman to fight Al Qaeda and the disarming of Sunni's in Baghdad which resulted in the ethnic cleansing of Baghdad of Sunni's by Shia Militia....

Just asking. Not my line but Ron Beasley's at cernig's place. I picked up the meme when Brzezinski more or less mentioned it in FT. Now Juan Cole expands on the idea, pointing out that Obama's pronouncements have already pissed off the wrong people in Pakistan and stirring up an already muddy diplomatic swamp . Obama's aggressive stance, on the other hand, could be counterproductive....

In a Salon piece, Middle East expert Juan Cole says Obama is right on Iraq and wrong on Afghanistan. In general, Obama’s policies toward Iraq synchronize neatly with the aspirations of the Shiite-dominated elected Iraqi government, with an affirmation of the need to gain the consent of the Iraqis for any status-of-forces agreement with the U.S., [...]

Juan Cole in Salon : "Barack Obama's Afghanistan and Iraq policies are mirror images of each other. Obama wants to send 10,000 extra U.S. troops to Afghanistan, but wants to withdraw all American soldiers and Marines from Iraq on a short timetable. In contrast to the kid gloves with which he treated the Iraqi government, Obama repeated his threat to hit at al-Qaida in neighboring Pakistan...

Juan Cole President of the Global Americana Institute That is, the Iraqi death toll is actually still worse now than the last time Obama was in Iraq! The hype around last year's troop escalation obscures a simple fact: that Obama formed his views about the need for the US to leave Iraq at a time when its security situation was very similar to what it is now!
