Today, the Lib Dems finally reported on their regularly updated website that two more of their councillors, including their Deputy Leader, had resigned. They did so on Friday, so it took four days for them to admit to the embarrassment of losing yet more members to the Conservatives. However, apparently it was not the most significant issue affecting Shepway Lib Dems today. That was the...

After losing control of Folkestone Town Council last month, the Lib Dems now suffer the shock and indignity of losing their status as the single largest party. Having won 11 of the 18 seats, against 3 Conservatives, 3 People First and an Independent, they now have only 7 councillors, a figure matched by the Conservatives. Meanwhile, having battled to have their leader recognised as Leader of...

I've recently noticed that two Lib Dem Councillors, including the Mayor, have defected to the Conservatives. That has deprived the Lib Dems of a majority on the council for the first time in 18 years. Is there something in the waters of the English Channel that's making so many Lib Dems switch to Conservative lately? So, welcome to the party The Worshipful Mayor of Bognor Regis, Cllr...

The Welsh Lib Dems website has the full story, “We can win,” says Welsh Lib Dem Euro candidate (and quite a lot of psephology): Welsh Liberal Democrat members across Wales have selected Dr. Alan Butt Philip as their lead candidate for the 2009 European Parliament elections. And having won one election, Alan Butt Philip is [...]

From tv and internet (and William Hill ), there seem to be a lot of people talking up the SNP's chances of winning the Glasgow East by-election - though it is hard to see why. The result from Glasgow East last time shows the SNP a long, long way behind and indeed shows that their share of the vote fell last time - it was was the Lib Dems (and the Tories on a very miniscule level) who actually...

Congratulations to the ICAEW for winning an engagement offered by the Liberal Democrats, to audit their expenses. Lib Dem MPs will have their receipts studied by the ICAEW in regular spotchecks. I hope that the money earned will be used to offset future membership fee increases that are no doubt planned by the ICAEW.

Following Nicol Stephen’s surprise resignation as leader of the Scottish Lib Dems, three MSPs have declared their intent to succeed him, according to today’s papers. Here’s The Times: Tavish Scott, the former Transport Minister, who is widely tipped as the favourite to replace Nicol Stephen as leader, formally announced his bid only hours after the former [...]

Alan Butt Phillip almost let the cat out of the bag when introduced to the press as lead Lib Dem candidate for next year’s European elections. The first part of his campaign, he said, would be among party members. Those who recall past Euro-campaigns quietly added - among party members to ensure that they turned out [...]

Following Friday's crisis meeting with the local Lib Dem leadership, Cllr Peter Gane, long serving member for Cheriton and current Mayor of Folkestone and Cllr Sue Wallace of Folkestone Harbour have both taken the decision to leave the Lib Dem groups on Shepway District Council and Folkestone Town Council. Dear Vince Cable, It seems that we share a common perspective on the latest Conservative proposal for changing taxes. Fuel duty is certainly a sensitive issue at the moment and the announcement was timed to hurt Labour badly. Unfortunately I’m a little cautious about singing the praises of this proposal as it seems a little isolated. The mechanism [...]
