How's that for substance over style? Still stinging from last week's home loss to Pittsburgh, the Red Wings finally gave coach Mike Babcock what he wanted. They passed up cute plays and opted for discipline to beat the Edmonton Oilers, 4-0, on Monday night in their return to Joe Louis Arena.

Red Wings backup goaltender Ty Conklin got his second straight start, and Chris Osgood got some valuable extra practice time Monday. Coach Mike Babcock gave Osgood the night off against Edmonton and, in return, the veteran hit the ice early and stuck around after most of his teammates had left to work on his fundamentals with goalie coach Jim Bedard.

Chris Osgood pledged that the Red Wings would be better come spring, and coach Mike Babcock called Tuesday's loss to Pittsburgh a springboard to a better season. from Ansar Khan of Mlive, Coach Mike Babcock said he expects forward Johan Franzen to return to the lineup for Tuesday’s game against Pittsburgh. Franzen has been out since Oct. 25 with a sprained left MCL. If he returns Tuesday, he will have missed only five games, half of what he missed with a similar injury last year around this time. more

Wings coach Mike Babcock wants to coach Canada's men's hockey team in the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver, and everybody knows it. Wings vice president Steve Yzerman was named executive director for Team Canada last week, and Wings executive vice president/general manager Ken Holland was named associate director along with Edmonton Oilers president Kevin Lowe.
