Feed the Hungry Food Drive helps feed families

The annual Alvin Community College Can Feed the Hungry Food Drive has started. For more than 20 years, the staff and students of the college have teamed up with the community to help feed families in need during the holidays. Sponsored by the Church of Christ Student Fellowship, the drive helped feed 35 families last year. Donations can be dropped at the college until Dec. 11.

COUNTY Tax volunteers being sought AARP Tax-Aide is seeking volunteers to learn tax law and basic income tax preparation to help others beginning in February with filing their personal income tax forms. Volunteers are asked to commit to at least four hours per week from Feb. 1 through April 15. Volunteers will be trained in January.

District eyes way to keep rowdy graduation calm

Seniors in the Pearland school district could be required to sign an agreement acknowledging they will behave at graduation in order to participate in the ceremony. Pearland High School principal Michele Staley and Glenda Dawson High School principal David Moody are working out the details, district spokeswoman Renea Ivy-Simms said.

Manvel City Hall expansion considered

The city of Manvel may pursue a plan to triple the size of its cramped City Hall facility. During City Council's meeting on Monday, Lake Jackson-based Integrated Architectural & Design, LLC is scheduled to present a plan for the proposed 4,000-square-foot addition, Mayor Delores Martin said. The project's estimated cost could be as much as $800,000, she said.

PEARLAND ISD: Grant funds after-school enrichment at Lawhon

A free after-school program launched last month at Lawhon Elementary School allows pupils to take part in academic enrichment activities. A five-year grant written in collaboration with the Harris County Department of Education is letting Lawhon to offer the 21st Century Community Learning Center After-School Program for children in kindergarten through the fourth grade.

Scholarship available for single mothers

The Women in Leadership Society of United Way Brazoria County is offering a new college scholarship for single mothers in financial need who reside in Brazoria County. The deadline to apply is Dec. 5. Women who are interested must complete a short application, provide two letters of recommendation, and write a one-page essay, according to a news release.

The art department at Alvin Community College will be offering evening and weekend three-hour credit classes in ceramics during the spring semester, which starts Jan. 14. The classes will be held Mondays and Wednesdays, from 6 to 8:50 p.m., and on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Alvin police seek residents to monitor radar

The Alvin Police Department is seeking resident volunteers for its new Citizens-Assisted Radar Enforcement Program. As part of the CARE program, volunteers will be trained in the use of the department’s hand-held radar device for the purpose of observing, recording and reporting speeding vehicles in their neighborhoods to the police department, according to a news release.

Christmas train rides to be offered next month in Alvin

Area residents can take an old-fashioned train ride through a winter wonderland at Victory Camp in Alvin. The ninth annual Christmas Train event kicks off Dec. 12, according to a news release. Area residents can come and enjoy Christmas scenery and more than 100,000 lights. Children can bounce through the Tinsel Town area and have their picture taken with Santa Claus.
