Phil Coke is a late bloomer who received an ample late season pen audition with the Yankees. While Coke was a starter in the minors, he’s a candidate to be a member of New York’s bullpen in 2009 - as a left-handed specialist and/or middle innings long-man. Held the 52 big league batters that [...]

Marte gets $3.75 million next year and $4 million in each of the following two seasons under the agreement announced Wednesday. The Yankees have a $4 million option for 2012 with a $250,000 buyout.Rookie Phil Coke joined Marte in the bullpen last September and looked impressive, giving the Yankees two lefty relievers."It really set up our bullpen nice," Girardi said. "Damaso has late-inning...

... for a good lefty reliever for years now. Mike Stanton’s last good year in pinstripes was 2002. 3. Phil Coke is not the answer, not yet anyway. He was a stumbling-along prospect who broke through last season and pitched well in a series of generally meaningless September games. Let’s not get too excited. Besides, bringing Marte back allows them the luxury of seeing whether Coke...

... out of line. And I think Marte is better than he showed in his brief time with the Yankees. And if Phil Coke turns out to be as good as he looked, the Yankees will have two lefthanders and a deep bullpen for Joe Girardi to play with. Mariano Veras Bruney Edwar Marte Cook Giese or some other long man type Plus some good-looking youngsters knocking on the door. Girardi showed a ton...

This is just what I wanted to see happen. Many people didn’t like Marte early on because he struggled, but later on he settled down and pitched very well. He is left-handed pitcher, who is a strikeout machine. Those are hard to come by these days. The Yankees needed a lefty in the bullpen, so this was an important move. Marte and Phil Coke could be a dominant duo in the pen. The Yankees...

In a surprising move, Damaso Marte's $6 million option was declined . This was a guy the Yankees had wanted for years, so I don't quite understand it. I know Phil Coke was phenomenal in limited action, but as the old axiom goes: "Don't put too much stock into March or September." Rosters are watered down, teams aren't playing as hard, etc. They'll probably offer him arbitration, thereby...
