Even before the clock struck 9 last night, signalling the start of a summer of curfews in the Cornish town of Redruth, the streets were strangely devoid of young people. Operation Goodnight, the much talked-about summer initiative to drive antisocial teenagers off the streets, appeared to have worked before it had started.
