Rent It The Movie: There were times when making my way through Daphne I wondered if I were watching an earnest, if melodramatic, depiction of author Daphne Du Maurier's conflicted sexual proclivities, or instead had stumbled upon a little known, brilliantly executed Christopher Guest parody done in the style of Douglas Sirk. Widescreen passion, often tamped down by societal norms, with...

Rent It THE MOVIE: After recently seeing Li Yu's 2005 film Dam Street , I was eager to see her third and most recent effort, Lost in Beijing . Now that I have, I have mixed feelings about it. A case of my expectations being too high, or of the film falling short? Set in contemporary China, Lost in Beijing follows two couples whose lives become hopelessly intertwined following a drunken...

Rent It The Movie: Robert Louis Stevenson's Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde is perhaps the classic author's most well-known work. It has served as the basis for a lot of horror films over the years, and the story's public domain status has certainly contributed to this prolific output. My personal favorite is still the old black and white version with Fredric March who won the...

Yes, it's a joke, and your local Blockbuster store is still around (and open!), but I could totally see something like this existing in, say,...

I haven't gotten into Netflix yet, or any other methods of watching movies at home, but I’ve watched many downloaded films at home (my father’s doing, not mine) and truth be told, I can't remember the last time I went out and rented a movie. And that used to be something I did at least once a week. In fact, it used to be one of my favourite activities before I discovered alcohol...

Last night was movie night. I got the pizza, popcorn, m-n-ms and movie. Husband forgot the wine, but I still managed to enjoy myself. My boys, all three of them, and I settled in to watch Who Framed Roger Rabbit? I chose this cartoon because I'm sick of all those flicks about the baseball team where Hometown Hero overcomes incredible odds to win the game. I chose something different....
