It was just a week ago that rumors were flying that the Red Sox were interested in acquiring reliever Ron Mahay from Kansas City. After last night's performance by Mahay against the Sox , I for one am breathing a sigh of relief (no pun intended). Mahay came into the game and immediately started giving up hits. In his one inning of work he gave up four hits and three earned runs. I know, it's only one...

KANSAS CITY - The Red Sox have added to their lead with J.D. Drew's clutch bases-loaded single in the sixth off Ron Mahay, scoring a pair of runs. Drew ran the count to 3-0 and then 3-1 before putting a nice smooth swing on a Mahay fastball. The Sox lead 5-2 in the bottom of the sixth.

Disappointed that your favorite team didn't pick up a lefty reliever for the stretch run? Eric Seidman does a good job of pointing out why a guy like Ron Mahay would likely have minimal impact on the stretch run . It's very possible that more teams are realizing this, making them more reluctant to deal prospects for marginal upgrades at the deadline.

KANSAS CITY - Ron Mahay just showed why he was coveted by the Red Sox at the trade deadline - he struck out Jason Varitek with two on and two out in the eighth to escape a jam and maintain a 4-2 lead for the Sox. Mahay, a former Red Sox replacement player center-fielder, is quite an athlete. Before the game in 100-degree conditions, Mahay ran several times from foul pole to pole. Pretty impressive....

Reliever Ron Mahay can breathe easier. Second baseman Mark Grudzielanek's desire to play for a contender now likely hinges on the Royals somehow climbing back into the race. Everyone is staying put for now.
