The Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks, and the Roman Catholic Archbishop of Westminster, Cardinal Cormac Murphy-O'Connor, joined Dr Williams at the front of the procession and, in something of a metaphor, the Anglican Communion straggled out behind. A fleet of rickshaws that someone had thoughtfully provided brought up the rear, carrying those primates who were less mobile.

When Dr Rowan Williams stood to address the the first plenary session of the Lambeth Conference at Canterbury last night, he apologised that the delegates were having to listen to him so much - they had just come out of pre-conference retreat at which the Archbishop had given reflective addresses.
