New York's Metropolitan Opera has turned down an opera by singer-songwriter Rufus Wainwright (a bit of a diva himself) because he wrote it in French and refused to translate the libretto into English. That's too bad because the story sounds like it would make great opera. Prima Donna is about a day in the life of an ageing opera star in 1970s Paris. I suppose they won't be performing Verdi or Puccini...

The piano man had begun work on his first ever opera, but he's composing it in French, and his would-be commissioners at the Met and Lincoln Center prefer English for new operas. That's why he's looking to find it a new home -- that, and because the Met can't even fit it in 'til 2014 and Rufus "added wryly, 'I'm an impatient pop star.'"

We’ve never seen an opera at the Met. It’s one of those things that has been discussed as a sort of thing-to-do-while-you- live-in-New-York, but since we’ve been here for eleven years, and aren’t going anywhere, what’s the rush? But we’ll admit that we would have been intrigued by the thought of seeing an opera by pop diva Rufus Wainwright, especially since it’s about a “day in the life of an aging...

I've been a loyal fan of Rufus Wainwright for 10 years. I've been a Torontonian for 13 years. Wainwright is one of my favourite performers today, I love all of his music. I also love living in Toronto. It's too bad that Wainwright felt the need to spout off about his apparent contempt for the Big Smoke for Xtra recently.Said Wainwright: "I hate visiting Toronto. I can't stand it. The place drives me...

Cheerily titled first single ‘Don’t Believe in Love’ will be released mid-September. If you really can’t wait for that, she’s currently...
