McCain's Medals "McCain had roughly 20 hours in combat," explains Bill Bell, a veteran of Vietnam and chief of the U.S. Office for POW/MIA Affairs -- the first official U.S. representative in Vietnam since the 1973 fall of Saigon. "Since McCain got 28 medals," Bell continues, "that equals out to about a medal-and-a-half for each hour he spent in combat. There were infantry guys -- grunts on the ground...

After exploring Hoi An we headed south for Ho Chi Minh City also known as Saigon. Although the north and south are united you tend to sense a bit of seperation when coming this far south. The people here call this city Saigon as they did in the old days whereas those from the north call it by the new name Ho Chi Minh City in honor of Uncle Ho. The differences don't stop there and tend to center

One of the most popular events of the annual New Yorker Festival is Calvin Trillin's food-oriented walking tour of SoHo, Greenwich Village, Chinatown, and Little Italy. According to the New York Times , one of the tour's favorite destinations is Banh Mi Saigon Bakery, also one of my top lunch destinations. Standing outside, dipping his roll into peanut sauce, he said he liked to eat standing up. "If...

April 1975 was certainly a historically significant month and not only because of my birthday. On the 17th of April Phnom Penh was ldquoliberatedrdquo by the Khmer Rouge and on the 30th Saigon ldquofellrdquo to the North Vietnamese Army. Not that I would remember but Irsquom sure most of the world soon forgot about the second Indochina war. America had lost and returned home there was n

Top of the agenda today is a day trip to the Mekong River delta. We had booked a trip in the back packerrsquos area. An 8.00 am departure ended up being an 8.30 start. A normal level of confusion for the Vietnamese was present in a bustling area. For 2 hours we traveled across flat country with the only hills being bridges over numerous rivers. We boarded a small boat and there were eleven

Hey everyoneIt has been a while since my last post but here it is HOI AN.My first day in Hoi An started off with what might have been the best breakfast I have had so far in Vietnam. After breakfast I walked around and explored the town. Although I had heard that there are lot's of tailors in Hoi An I didn't expect anything like this. Every second store is a tailor and you can literally get any

Film Reviews: Highlighting a problem that's far too common in Vietnam and many other countries, "The Little Heart" is an affecting meller about an innocent girl from the sticks who's tricked into sexual slavery in Saigon.

It seems the McCain campaign aren't the only folks still focused on Vietnam. This fund-raising plea from NRSC vice-chairman Sen. Orrin Hatch landed in my inbox late last night, compliments of the wing-nuts at GOPUSA. The subject line on the email is "Hanoi Jane is back, stop her now!": Dear Fellow Conservative, You'd think it was the 1970s all over again. Liberals are resurrecting Jimmy Carter's failed...
