Scott Eyre figured he would take a leisurely drive in his recreational vehicle from Chicago to his home in Bradenton, Fla., with his two sons and two dogs and wait there to see if any major-league team would have any interest in him.

Summary: Newly acquired reliever Scott Eyre is 2-0 with a 7.15 ERA in 19 appearances this season, but he wasn’t scored upon until his 15th appearance. The 36-year-old has been on the disabled list twice this season, once with elbow inflammation and then again with a strained groin. The Phillies had been searching for another lefthanded pitcher for their bullpen for months. They think they found one yesterday, when they traded single-A Clearwater pitcher Brian Schlitter to the Chicago Cubs for lefthander Scott Eyre, who could be in Philadelphia for tonight's series opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates at Citizens Bank Park.

EVEN AS THE PHILLIES announced the newest addition to their bullpen yesterday, they acknowledged that one of their biggest pieces might be taken away. The organization traded for lefthander Scott Eyre yesterday, 2 days after the 36-year-old was designated for assignment by the Cubs, an acquisition that could take on added importance now with the uncertain future of veteran setup man Tom Gordon.

Lefty Scott Eyre is owed about $1.2 million for the rest of the season. Just a few notes to pass along. According to one Chicago newspaper blog, the Phils are on the hook for Eyre’s deal, as mentioned. Brian Schlitter, who was sent to Chicago, is a local product. To clear space for newly acquired reliever Scott Eyre, the Phils will probably option left-hander J.A. Happ back to Triple-A. That's a guess,...

A couple of reliever trades today: -P- The Rays got Chad Bradford from the O's for a player to be named . Bradford's having a decent season--albeit with a ridiculously awful strikeout rate--and his wacky delivery still drives righties nuts. He's a low-leverage reliever at this point and his magically disappearing strikeouts indicate that he's near the end of the line, but he's a useful guy to have...

It didn't take long to find a home for Scott Eyre and Jim Hendry does him the favor of putting him in another pennant race. Eyre goes to the Phillies for minor league RHP Brian Schlitter (thanks to reader Chifan for the tip). Schlitter stands 6-5" and was a 16th round pick of the Phillies out of College of Charleston. Similar to the Cubs recent first round pick, Andrew Cashner, Schlitter considered...
