Shades of Radical Chic? Here’s Move On on the Upper West Side, grappling with the reality of an Obama administration — which, of course, they wanted. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_GG5mb_tfo By the way, New York Magazine puts this in the YouTube category of “Comedy.” Tom Wolfe couldn’t have said it better himself. Too bad there isn’t also a YouTube category for “Adorably [...]
One of the founders of PayPal, a principle investor in Facebook, the president of Clarium Capital, and one of Forbes's 400 richest Americans, Peter Thiel is what Tom Wolfe would have termed a master of the universe. What do Peter Thiel and I discuss this week on Uncommon Knowledge? At his suggestion--I repeat, at his suggestion--a 40-year old book first published in France. An enormous bestseller,...
It's hard to say when the Landmarks Preservation Commission's official descent into hell began. It could have been with Tom Wolfe's screed about what a joke the agency is. Or it could have been the Times editorial about how what...
Irving Kristol famously said that a neoconservative is a liberal who has been mugged by reality. Tom Wolfe neatly inverted this ugly sentiment by observing that “a liberal is a conservative who has been arrested.” We can see the wisdom of Wolfe’s statement when we consider the case of Conrad Black, a very conservative tycoon who [...]

Bob Dylan is timeless. This 1960s song is proving prophetic for a second time. About to be gone with the wind are the material excesses that followed the Sixties and were satirised in Tom Wolfe’s The Bonfire of the Vanities....
This seems like a good time to quote Tom Wolfe again, in his interview with Carol Iannone, against barking mad pc rubbish invading scholarly disciplines. If only the sciences were immune - but fat chance, so here goes: People in academia should start insisting on objective scholarship, insisting on it, relentlessly, driving the point home, ramming [...]
This seems like a good time to quote Tom Wolfe again, this time against barking mad pc rubbish invading scholarly disciplines: People in academia should start insisting on objective scholarship, insisting on it, relentlessly, driving the point home, ramming it down the gullets of the politically correct, making noise! naming names! citing egregious examples! showing contempt to the brink of brutality!...
I agree, but there are many more reasons than this one: all of which, having seen in person, you really, really wish you could use to beat the shit out of Tom Wolfe. While the derisive comment about Tom Wolfe resonated (with me), the post is worth reading because its subject matter is not Tom Wolfe, but rather War Memorials (read the comments too).
A Critic in Full: A Conversation with Tom Wolfe (Carol Iannone, 8/11/08, , Academic Questions Iannone: About neuroscience, though, I thought I was getting from I Am Charlotte Simmons the idea that we’re resisting that, resisting that we are just impulses and synapses and so on? Wolfe: There’s neuroscience the science and there’s genetic theory. They are two entirely different things. José Delgado...

Ann Althouse (Sept 25) mentions Mickey mentioning Tom Wolfe on jet fighter pilots. I am left thinking that what may come across as impulsive and erratic in the context of politics and the economy may simply reflect the very short...
What the conservative movement needs now is more people like Tom Wolfe, Jane Jacobs, Jacques Barzun, Noam Chomsky, and, wait — wha? So explains Austin Bramwell in the smartest essay you will read today: “Great non-movement conservatives have in common only that they have advanced particular conservative positions. None has contributed anything to conservatism as [...]
