MONTREAL.- The Musée d'art contemporain will be literally electrified this fall by the exhibition Sympathy for the Devil: Art and Rock and Roll Since 1967. The title is taken from the eponymous Rolling Stones song. Montréal is the only stop in Canada and the Northeast for this exhibition, which will run from October 10, 2008 to January 11, 2009.
I recently saw one of my favorite movies again, The Royal Tenenbaums. It’s definitely good for a laugh, but I’m always struck by the soundtrack, which provides a sonic pastiche of the movie. One of the songs featured is “These Days” which was written by Jackson Browne and performed by Nico, formerly of the Velvet [...]

In Rolling Stone’s recent review of Lou Reed’s Berlin: Live at St. Ann’s Warehouse, Barry Walters writes, “The Kurt Weill-like class commentary of ‘Men of Good Fortune’ gains severity: Guitarist Steve Hunter embodies privilege with flashy heroics, and Reed represents unskilled labor via blunt six-string bursts.” The album is out digitally now via iTunes and [...]
At 21 minutes long Vivian Girls‘ debut album is over almost before it begins; it flashes by in a cloud of sludgy distortion and hissy noise. The trio belongs to a proud heritage of noise pop that started (as do so many things) with the Velvet Underground, went through to the Shop Assistants and early [...]
Musician, and all round greatest living Welshman - sorry Tom Jones - John Cale is curating and headlining a tribute to Bavarian ice maiden Nico at the Royal Festival Hall. Described as "an iconoclastic tribute" to his Velvet Underground colleague...
Dancer Vs. Politician's music perfectly matches the season where the colours are warm and the wind is cold. Yes, I'm talking about autumn. By far my favorite season of the four, A City Half-Lost is an album that enhances the richness of the current state outside my window. And that's pretty impressive considering that I [...]
Beck, MGMT and Chicago radio station WXRT teamed up to bring fans a surprise set at Martyrs before their previously announced show at the Aragon later that evening. In an ...
Just because the idea of assembling the worst album covers of all time has been done quite a bit over the past few years doesn't mean we can't always use yet another gallery of cringe-worthy covers. The Chicago Tribune is...
As it turns out, Andy Warhol's relationship with music went back a lot farther than, well, the Velvet Underground. It actually began when he was Andrew Warhola, designing for Opera News (pictured) and creating classical record covers in the fifties....
I was introduced by Celeste to Stuff White People Like a couple weeks back (I know, I’m a bit behind on this), and I’ve been reading the site ever since. So when I was in Barnes and Noble the other day and saw the “Stuff White People Like” book on the shelf, I had [...]
I’ve been browsing the somewhat peculiar music collection at the main branch of the Santa Monica public library. I’ve come to trust, more or less, the music buyer’s taste in popular music, but have noted a number of quirks, a la the Girls. There’s a group called the Beta Band which is represented by four [...]
