I’ve received a copy of a letter sent by the Council to local residents in the vicinity of the site of the proposed new build for Walkden High School. It’s an update on the proposals and I thought it would be a good idea to post it on here for information. There’s also a section on [...]

120 years ago today, the first passenger train arrived at Walkden station. The Friends of Walkden Station kindly organised a small stall and celebration this morning which was well appreciated by commuters who snapped up the available goody bags in no time at all. Northern Rail staff and the British Transport Police were also in [...]

Yesterday I attended a presentation at Farnworth Fire Station for a group of young people from Little Hulton, Walkden, Ellenbrook and Boothstown who have been involved in the Fire Service “Firefly” project. You can read more about Firefly on the GMFRS website. I was extremely impressed with both the Fire Service instructors and with the young [...]

The Yorkshire/Lancashire Group of the British Haiku Society now have their own website at http://web.mac.com/garycunliffe/haiku/ . One of the first things to be published there is an 8-minute video of a walk in the Japanese Garden at Walkden where the group met in June. In July JSNW held Japan Day 2008 in the Mountford Hall of Liverpool University, with a wide variety of stalls and demonstrations....

Huge congratulations to the Friends of Walkden Station who have been nominated for a prestigious national award. They have done a fantastic job in the 18 months or so since they were set up and fully deserve the accolade. I hope they go on to win!

Just a quick note - I’ve written to the Building Schools for the Future team asking for the distribution list for the Walkden High School bulletin I referred to in my previous post. Obviously I’m keen for that information to be distributed as widely as possible (hence reposting it both on this website and on the Walkden [...]

... your suggestions! I’m particularly keen to add blogs by Conservative elected representatives and Walkden/Worsley/Salford-based blogs (they don’t have to be political). I’m happy to take suggestions for non-Conservative political blogs but please be aware I’ll only tend to add them if a) there’s a personal connection or b) if they already have a reciprocal link. Of the three current “other...

Walking up towards Walkden town centre earlier today, I noticed that someone has clattered into the fencing on the corner of Park Road and Walkden Road/Memorial Road again. This seems to happen once every few weeks, as local residents and traders will testify. However, every time the fence is damaged, Urban Vision come along and repair it. I [...]

... my seat from Labour in 2004. At my first Council Meeting, a senior Labour Councillor talked about Walkden South “temporarily” voting Conservative - the implication being at the next election local residents would see sense and vote Labour again. Alas it didn’t quite happen like that. Conservative Councillors in Salford will never take the local community for granted.

I’ve just got back from a spot of light early evening leafleting in the sunshine. Well, it was supposed to be sunshine - instead I got as far as Blakefield Drive, the heavens opened and I got soaked. The (minor) perils of being a local Councillor. Our summer Walkden South newsletter is about half delivered now, local [...]
