Sabernomics : Did the Braves Overvalue Ohman? — I was surprised yesterday when the trade deadline passed and Will Ohman was still a part of the Braves. Ohman is a lefty specialist capable of throwing a lot of innings, and he'll be a free agent after this season. He's a good candidate for deadline deal.

J.C. Bradbury asks this morning whether the Braves overvalued lefty reliever Will Ohman. Roughly ten teams had interest in him, but the Braves elected not to trade him. The Braves' reason for keeping Ohman is that in their opinion no offer exceeded the value of the draft pick they might receive if he leaves via free agency. Here's a refresher on how free agent compensation works. A couple of things...

The trade deadline has passed and surprisingly, Will Ohman is still part of Bobby Cox’s bullpen. With Mike Hampton making his second start this season, Ohman may very well be needed tonight. Hampton struggled in his first start, allowing six earned runs on eight hits and two walks over four innings. The good news was [...]

Per Jayson Stark at ESPN: First, Brian Fuentes. Now, Will Ohman. The Braves have informed clubs that were interested in Ohman that they're keeping their primary left-handed setup man unless some team dramatically steps up its offer in the next half-hour. Ten teams were interested in Ohman. But the Braves obviously felt none of them made an offer that provided more value than the compensation pick...

The Phillies are one of the teams still said to be looking for relief help, but as Mark Bowman says, the Braves don't seem to be finding a match with anyone: The Braves are still listening to multiple offers for Will Ohman. But so far, they haven't been satisfied that the offered compensation is greater than the compensatory Draft pick they'd receive by losing him via the free agent market this winter....

In trying to guage what kind of return we can get for Will Ohman, we can look to the recently completed trade between the Marlins and Mariners. Seattle sent 38-year old reliever Arthur Rhodes to the Marlins for 22-year old pitcher Gaby Hernandez. The young Hernandez was rated as the 6th-best prospect in the Marlins organization this year and is considered a mid to back end of the rotation starter...

OK now back to the selling mode. Left-handed reliever Will Ohman will come to Turner Field as a member of a fourth-place team on Wednesday and find himself with a postseason contender by the time Thursday concludes. He will definitely be traded and the best guess now is that he'll land with the Cardinals. MLB Trade Talk

But the Sox might end up with John Grabow, and the Tigers may be content with Kyle Farnsworth as their relief addition. Grabow may also be on the Rays' radar. MLB.com's Mark Bowman has the Rays, Yankees, and Red Sox after Ohman, with the Cardinals out of the bidding....
