By Nicholas Stix VDARE blog June 25, 2008 Eight days later, New York Mets’ general manager Omar Minaya’s dead-of-night firing of manager Willie Randolph reverberates . As an assistant Mets GM during the late 1990s, the Dominican-born Minaya proved himself an astute judge of talent, and the Montreal Expos (now the Washington Nationals) hired him away in 2002 as their GM. When the Mets signed Minaya...

Its still very much the honeymoon period of Jerry Manuel’s managing career with the Mets, but the early returns are quite impressive. How much credit does Jerry Manuel actually deserve for how well the Mets have played since he took the reigns? How much of a difference from Willie Randolph’s style of managing to Manuel’s [...]

Not nearly satisfied with his role in the dismissal of Mets manager Willie Randolph —- can a newspaper columnist be voted a playoff share? — the Bergen Record’s Ian O’Connor can foresee a day in the not-so-distant future when the current captain of the New York Yankees is also considered surplus to requirements. Brett Favre today [...]

Perhaps it was meant simply as wholehearted praise for Jerry Manuel, but for the second time in three days, Mets closer Billy Wagner sure sounded as if he was taking a thinly-veiled shot at deposed manager Willie Randolph. Wagner had just closed...

The Mets have made a move prior to the series with the Rockies, they have sent down OF Chris Aguila and called up Robinson Cancel. The Mets tried carrying a third catcher under Willie Randolph and the concept never worked. The idea was to have light hitting Brian Schnieder work with the starting rotation while Castro was to be used as a pinch hitter late in games with either Cancel or Casanova in reserve...

Jerry Manuel was the Mets' interim manager for exactly three days when he joked with reporters about getting a three-year extension. Almost a month later, that's not such a ridiculous idea. Based on his immediate success in reviving what too often looked like a dead team under Willie Randolph, he has to be considered a strong favorite to keep the job.

PHILADELPHIA - The Mets were guaranteed to have one important representative at the All-Star Game, but that plan went to pot when Willie Randolph was fired. Randolph was supposed to be a coach on the NL squad; now he'll be sitting at home unless the Yankees figure out a role for him at the July 15 game at Yankee Stadium.

The Mets had plenty of opportunities tonight, in what seemed to be an unfortunate redux of various parts of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 seasons. You can take Willie Randolph out of the clubhouse, but it still doesn't mean the Mets can hit a rookie left-hander. J.A. Happ didn't pitch all that well tonight, but one would not have been surprised to see the name "Kuo" on the back of his jersey. But unlike...
