Google has named the winners of its Android developer challenge. It's handing out $275,000 to each of the 10 grand prize winners and $100,00 apiece to 10 second prize winners ( full list here ). For most app developers, those prizes are likely to be the biggest payouts they ever get for their work. But if Google really wants to reward app developers, it can throw in yet another prize: Bundling their...

Google has unveiled its long-awaited answer to the iTunes app store for the iPhone: The Android Market , which will sell programs for the upcoming "Gphone" from T-Mobile, and every other handset that runs on Google's mobile OS. The big difference: Apple runs it own store with a pretty firm hand. If you want in, you've got play by their rules . But Google has an open door policy: Developers who want...

Sam Gustin submits: There's been some semantic sniping about whether HTC's forthcoming "Dream" -- powered by Google's (GOOG) Android OS and offered by T-Mobile -- really qualifies as the GPhone, considering the Web giant isn't actually building the phone. Well, if new mock-ups of the device are to be trusted, T-Mobile intends to brand the phone with a "Google" label on the back of it. Complete Story...

The Android Guys blog has an image and specs providing the most details yet (if correct ...) on the long-awaited GPhone that T-Mobile will begin selling by year-end. Of course it's an HTC handset powered by Android operating system initiated by Google. New details shown in the image include Google's brand prominently displayed on the back of the handset, similar to the way the iPhone has a big Apple...

We know that the first Gphone -- a mobile phone running on Google's Android operating system -- will come from handset-maker HTC, and will be available via T-Mobile this fall. We also have a pretty good idea of what it will look like, based on a series of a leaks and sketches submitted to the FCC . But, for the record, here's what the people at Gphone-obsessed Android Guys insist is a bona-fide mockup...

Over at Engadget they have the dimensions on what is being called the HTC Dream phone. It is a tiny bit smaller than the iPhone, but not by much. The new phone is the one that is going to employ Google’s Android software and therefore has a designation of a gPhone. Here is what the Engadget shows on their site: Here’s how the smartphones compare: HTC Dream: 115 x 55-mm iPhone 3G: 115.2-mm x 62.1-mm...

Two Silicon Valley companies are attempting to bridge (or bypass) this divide by changing the way handsets and their applications are designed and distributed. In 2007, Apple and Google each announced efforts to reshape the wireless industry. Apple launched the iPhone in January 2007 and just recently it updated the platform with the iPhone 3G. Google announced Android in November 2007 along with marketing...

Sam Gustin submits: It's been awhile since Google (GOOG) played the role of the underdog. Nevertheless, it would be folly to underestimate the tech titan. Now that the Federal Communications Commission has approved HTC's "Dream" handset -- expected to be the first mobile phone to feature Google's "Android" operating system -- the stage is being set for a four-way showdown for dominance in the mobile...

Blaise Zerega says the FCC got this one right. One of the final hurdles faced by Google's Android operating system just fell by the way side. The FCC has approved HTC's "Dream " handset which will be sold by T-Mobile.
