Yesterday, Wolfram Research shut down the iPhone optimized version of Wolfram Alpha , the company's "computational knowledge engine." Many pundits speculated that Wolfram decided to shutter the mobile site in order to drive more users to the company's $50 iPhone app. Earlier this morning, we got a chance to talk to Schoeller Porter, Wolfram's product manager for the iPhone app . According...

Filed under: Utilities , iPhone , Search , Mobile Remember all the hoopla about Wolfram Alpha 's powerful-yet-extremely-expensive iPhone app? The $50 pricetag got more attention than the app's capabilities - doing everything the Wolfram Alpha website can do, and basically giving you a graphing calculator on your iPhone. It just seemed foolish to pay $50 when Wolfram Alpha already had a perfectly serviceable...

A couple months ago, Wolfram Alpha launched an impressive iPhone application based on their "computational knowledge engine" (a fancy word for search engine predicated on math) of the same name. Unfortunately, they horribly miscalcuted what it should cost when they set the price at $50. But rather than simply lowering the price, they're trying another trick. As we pointed out at the time,...

The first problem with the Wolfram Alpha iPhone app was that it cost $US50. The second problem was that the site’s iPhone web interface was nearly as good as the app, and it was free. Guess which issue Mathematica “fixed!” (more…)

Section: Web , Web Apps Wolfram Alpha is fantastic for finding any type of data known to man. Now they have released a new component of their service that gets closer to actually doing all of the work for you. The concept is simple. When you get stuck solving an equation, Wolfram Alpha will give that little push to keep you going. Of course any typical student will most likely abuse this service to...

If you go to wolframalpha.com on your iPhone (or iPod touch), instead of an optimized version of their website, you now presented with an intercept pop-up advising you that you can go to the App Store and get your $50 premium experience on. Were too many people not buying the app when they could get the [...]

Wolfram Alpha may be a data geek's dream , but if you're not all that interested in its more obsure uses, here's one thing we could all use a little help with: step-by-step math calculations. Just enter in the equation you want solved (say, for example, Solve 2x3 - 6.543x = x2 , then click the Show steps link to see how you could solve the problem yourself next time without the help of Wolfram Alpha....

Wolfram|Alpha can guide you step by step through the process of solving many mathematical problems, from solving a simple quadratic equation to taking the integral of a complex function. [For example] When trying...

Earlier this week, I heard Conrad Alpha speak at the TEDxBrussels convention. The man, a big force in the popular mathematics company, argued that computational aid at school should not be considered cheating. Computational aid, like Mathematica and Wolfram Alpha. In fact, declining these readily available tools is cheating. This discussion will lead to a rethinking of [...]

A new study has found that people aren't just using internet search engines for fact-finding missions but as part of their learning processes. The study extensively looked at 72 participants, who partook in 426 searching tasks. Researchers at Penn State University found that instead of looking for new information, search engines are primarily used to fact check information that you already know. Moving...

Microsoft has launched a new site for Bing, where users can go to find out the latest features that have been implemented into the search engine (excuse me, "decision engine"). The site's called Behind Bing . "You can see each feature in action though a screencast, see me talk about why we did it the way we did (for those who like to geek out), and get some drill-down details,"...
