AT&T buys small WiFi network operator Wayport for $275 million

Image via CrunchBase MobileCrunch reports about AT&T buying Wayport, a WiFi operator with around 3k hotspots in the US, for $275 Million. Fon has 300k Fonspots. We are 100 times larger and we grow a Wayport every week (although to be fair there is probably a 10 to 1 ratio in value of the their [...]

Web 2.0 Expo Europe Videos Up

Many of the keynote videos from last week's second Web 2.0 Expo Europe are available. The highlight for me was definitely Tim's conversation with Martin Varsavsky, the CEO of Fon. He discussed his path from Argentina to Spain, his handling of the credit crisis a year before Sequoia's warning and his philosphy as an entrepreneur. Other mainstage highlights included:...

ZON@FON em Campo de Ourique launched

We’re growing really fast in Portugal, mostly thanks to the agreement FON reached with Zon, the biggest cable internet and TV provider in Portugal. October 18th became another landmark for FON, when we officially launched a WiFi density project in Campo de Ourique, a district in Lisbon with its own unique atmosphere. Without being too [...]

Web 2.0 Expo Berlin: Martin Varsavsky

Martin Varsavsky, a serial entrepreneur most recently with Fon, was challenged by Tim O'reilly to elaborate on a recent blog post when he criticised some of the doom and gloom coming out of silicon valley. His point, he reitereated, was not that people...

introducing the Fonera 2.0

I keep getting asked where the Fonero event is tomorrow morning. It is at Cookie’s Cream Restaurant, Unter den Linden / Friedrichsstrasse (next to KPM) at 1030. At this event we will introduce the Fonera 2.0 which is a new Fon social WLAN or WiFi router that does many more things than allowing [...]

BT Halves Wifi Price, Fon Doubles Wifi Price.

Coming hot on the heels of Martin Varsavsky’s regretful announcement, that Fon Wifi will soon be doubled from $/€2 per day to $/€4 per day (he needs to visit fon.com more often. It’s actually $/€3 per day now), is this news that BT is cutting the price of wifi at their hotspots by as much [...]

Having Lots of Fon

One of the blogs I really enjoy reading is that of Fon's founder, Martin Varsavsky. What I love about his writing is his candour: he clearly writes what he thinks, even if it's slightly painful for others - or himself. I've already noted this interesting comment: Fon has to provide special VPN tunneling technology in the UK for the UK secret services to investigate suspected criminals and terrorists...

A Million Times, NO.

I could have guessed this was coming on September 8th, when Fon’s English board moderator, David Garcia started using this graphic in his signature line. It seems that Fon Wireless, LTD., who forgot to observe their own second birthday, is celebrating the induction of their One Millionth Fonero, Wilkinson-Chan of Japan. Today, Fon CEO [...]
