I guess I can understand if the White House saw the rightwing faux-controversy over Alma Thomas's Watusi (Hard Edge) as an unhelpful distraction, but that doesn't mean their people need to make shit up about it. Randy Kennedy reported...

You may remember back in October when the White House released a list of 45 artworks on loan to the Obamas from Washington museums. The artists selected vary in age, race, gender and geographical roots, reflecting the administration’s continued celebration of diversity. One particular painting, Watusi (Hard Edge), by African-American woman Alma Thomas and on loan from the Hirshhorn...

Even though they're insisting that it simply didn't fit, and that the decision had nothing to do with the wingnuts' epic ignorance about Alma Thomas' work, it's hard to believe that the White House is sending this particular painting back because there is nowhere in the entire First Family's home that this 47 5/8" x 44 1/4" work can be installed. I mean, I can understand not...

... been returned to the Hirshhorn Museum . As to why it was returned, therein lies the controversy. Alma Thomas' 1963 painting entitled Watusi (Hard Edge) looks remarkably similar to Henri Matisse's The Snail , painted ten years prior. Rotate The Snail [shown above right] 90 degrees counterlockwise, use a cooler color palette and - ta da! Watusi [shown above left] emerges. Imitation...

The painting by Alma Thomas, who obviously stole every shape from Henri Matisse's "The Snail," has been removed from the East Wing of the White House. I doubt anyone will ask for Matisse's original. Just have Malia and Sasha toss...

So now that the White House has returned Alma Thomas's 1968 painting, Watusi (Hard Edge) to the Hirshhorn amid a flurry of interest in its making and in the artist herself, I assume the museum will quickly put it...

Last month we learned what artworks the Obamas had chosen for the family quarters of the White House and the West and East Wing offices. One of the pictures that caught everybody's attention was Watusi (Hard Edge) by Alma Thomas, a lesser known Washington, D.C. area artist who died in 1978. But now [...]

Watusi (Hard Edge) by Alma Thomas... a Matisse ripoffNo matter how it is rotated, I can’t believe POTUS and FLOTUS thought this was such an incredible piece of art that it had to be hung in the White House. My son did something like this in kindergarten… his use of colors was much better than those used in this painting, IMO. Couldn’t they ask one of the two Obama daughters to whip up...
