This bird's nest is in a small suburban yard. It escaped notice all summer, hidden by the leaves of this "coral bark" Japanese maple. But with the wind and rain and natural course of the seasons, the leaves dropped, and now one's eye naturally tracks to the pretty bark of the tree, and then to the nest. INDIANAPOLIS - Larry Bird was not in the house when Bill Belichick decided to go for it on fourth and 2 from his 28. Even though Bird works just a few blocks from Lucas Oil Stadium, he has never been to a game there.

15th November 2009 The "no birds" bit isn't strictly true, although no interesting birds probably is. A walk around Whitlingham after the strong winds was notable only for a female Goldeneye , the first I've seen there this autumn. The best part of the day was finding a number of Bird's Nest fungi ( Crucibulum laeve ) on twigs near my house. (Well worth looking...

Come rain, shine or cyclone Phyan, winged visitors keen to get away from the rigours of the cold seem to have chosen inclement weather over the freezing conditions back home. The result: Goa’s lakes, shores and wetlands are teeming with bird life earlier than usual. “This year, birds have arrived earlier than the last few years,” Suresh [...]

The Symbiotic Green Wall turns the barrier between construction and the street into a living ecosystem, complete with grass pots, birds nests, and pollution monitors. The wall is completely self-sustaining...

Possibly hundreds of Antarctic icebergs are floating towards New Zealand in a rare event which has prompted a shipping warning, officials said on Monday. The icebergs are smaller remnants of the giant chunks seen off Australia’s Macquarie Island this month, including one estimated at two kilometres (1.2 miles) and another twice the size of Beijing’s “Bird’s [...]

... about deer meat. By mid-morning, a number of folks had commented about their experiences with Bird’s Nest Soup, octopus, cow brains and rattlesnake. Then, while I was in our 10 a.m. news meeting, someone posted in reply a single word, a vulgar expression for a part of a woman’s anatomy. It was there only a minute before a colleague deleted it. A few minutes later, the...

... Peaches finally emerged wearing a costume resembling a cross between a woolly mammoth and a bird's nest. She lumbered around in it some more before stripping down to a pink bodysuit-cum-superhero jumper to belt out hits "Serpentine" and "Kick It". A proper initiation. Check out photos of the mayhem after the jump.
