The Astros signed 25 of their top 26 draft picks in the June draft. In total, 36 of the 51 draft picks signed. There weren't as many early picks for Houston as they had in the 2008 draft; however, several players impressed in their first professional experience. Jiovanni Mier , SS, Greeneville (1st Round). Mier was ranked by Baseball America as the #2 prospect in the Appalacian League. He batted .276...

If people do good work, they're making progress, they're producing, that is no problem. Tal has been with me for 16 years on a one-year deal, and he'll certainly be back next year. ... ... in a span of six days with Wade, assistant general managers Ricky Bennett, David Gottfried and Bobby Heck and special assistant Enos Cabell. "It's an honor, actually," Bogar said. "Being here as a player was fantastic, but having a chance to come back here on the other side of it is wonderful. Obviously, when I was here, we got to the playoffs those three years as division champs....

... the farm. We fired the guy who did the most damage to the system (Purpura, remember). Ed Wade and Bobby Heck got hired back in late 2007, and they've been working on building things back up ever since. It's going to take a while to get that fixed, and until a reasonable amount of time has gone by, we shouldn't be beating the drums for people to lose their jobs on account of the farm...

... Too many managers. Too many general managers. It says right here that Tal Smith, Ed Wade and Bobby Heck are the right people to reconstruct the franchise. But hiring the right manager is critically important. The Astros could have three rookies in the opening day lineup, and they may all be All-Stars. They may all fail, too. Regardless, the new manager has to put them in a positive...

... go to winter ball as a starter with an eye toward competing for a rotation spot in the spring. Bobby Heck has pushed hard for Koby Clemens to be moved from catcher to first base exclusively. It sounds like Ed Wade agrees with him. He obviously won't be competing for a roster spot yet.

... draft can set an organization back three years. His most important hire has been scouting director Bobby Heck, who appears to have had two solid drafts. The truth is that we don't know if they were solid drafts or not. It'll take another year or two to know that. That's the devilish part about fixing a minor league system. You don't know it's broken until it's really broken, and you...

... system. When they arrived in Houston two years ago, general manager Ed Wade and assistant GM Bobby Heck inherited a farm system most said was devoid of true prospects and considered by some analysts to be the league's worst. To change that, the Astros adopted a simple philosophy: sign Draft choices as quickly as possible and get them on the field. They did that exactly that this summer,...
