A review of "Brothers," a wartime domestic drama based on the Danish film "Brødre." Tobey Maguire plays a damaged war veteran who returns home to his wife and brother, who've gotten a little too close in his absence.

Has anyone ever remade a film that you absolutely love? It can be odd to remove yourself from the familiar original while watching the shiny and new. Presumably not many people will have this problem with Brothers though I’ll admit up front that I did. This new war-at-home drama is adapted from a little seen Danish film of the same name. Natalie Portman plays Grace Cahill, a young mother and...

Didn't this movie come out last year? Or at least earlier this year? I remember seeing trailers for it a long time ago and then they just disappeared. I figured I either missed it or it was going to pop up on DVD at some point from a studio that lost faith in it. I guess I was wrong. It turns out it was just lying low, waiting to pounce on an unsuspecting audience. It has now arrived, inflicting its...

Fun fact: Five years separate Susanne Bier’s Danish film Brødre and the English-language remake, yet the defining trauma of both melodramas remains the war in Afghanistan. (And should the Danish want to remake the remake again in a few years, the script likely won’t need a rewrite.) Scripted by 25th Hour writer David Benioff and helmed by In The Name Of The Father director Jim Sheridan,...

Last night David and I spent a nice night out running around enjoying the quiet weekend. We decided to see the new film Brothers which stars Tobey Maguire , Natalie Portman and Jake Gyllenhaal : I am happy to report that Brothers is really a great film. I understand it is an American remake of a 2005 Danish film titled Brødre that is loosely based on the parable of The Prodigal Son in the Bible....

Hello Film Fans and Fanatics! Welcome to Film Fan Fridays for Friday December 4, 2009! It does mean we will be shifting into full force of awards season, which we can see by this weeks limited-but-will-expand-later release of Up in the Air which...

"Gyllenhaal admits that he was very challenged by the script (“Brothers” is a remake of the Danish language film “Brodre,” this time directed by an Irishman). “Just coming from Ireland it was interesting how Jim thought my character would act compared to my own American take,” Gyllenhaal says. “There’s a moment in the film when Natalie’s...

... us to feel unattractive in their cinematic presence. The movie, based on its Danish predecessor Brødre (directed by Susanne Bier ), finds Grace at a colossal loss when Sam is declared dead after going to war in Afghanistan. Tommy, fresh out of prison and sporting an “I’m-a-badass” neck tattoo, softens up after the death of his brother. He starts to fill in that husband void in Grace’s life....
