The Mets signed corner-infielder Mike Hessman to a 90K, minor league contract. He's one of the biggest three-true-outcome hitters in baseball, a Russell Branyan / Jack Cust -type who can absolutely crush minor league pitching. Bringing back Russell Branyan , who led the team with 31 home runs last season, would be a start, but he's battling back from a herniated disk and had a career year at age 33. The versatility of Figgins makes things easier as the M's seek another bat, because he can slot in at third base or in the outfield -- meaning...

... puts him in the who's who of hackers along side names like: Jack Cust , Mark Reynolds , Russell Branyan , and our own Carlos Pena . The strange part is his O-Swing (27.6%), while high, isn't that terrible. Sure, Reynolds and Branyan were in that territory last season, but so was fellow backstop, Brian McCann . Swinging at pitches outside the zone isn't the big issue, but Shoppach's...

... as any team in baseball. This isn’t to say that they won’t put a mediocre defender on the field (Branyan is no gold glover), but they will discount a player’s value heavily if he doesn’t offer value in the field. Bay is a bad defensive player, and at 31 years old, he’s not getting better. They also have put a premium on acquiring hitters who are left handed, due to the nature of Safeco Field....
