Liberal leader Michael Ignatieff has spoken the unblemished truth at the Calgary Stampede (emphasis added): Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff touted Saturday the economic virtues and national reach of Alberta's oilsands, urging Canadians to take pride in the mammoth industrial development, which has touched off international environmental opposition. Speaking at a party fundraiser Stampede breakfast...

Whether you agree or disagree with Ignatieff's approach to the tar sands, that is really irrelevant to this argument about consistency. Ignatieff was in Calgary, and again forwarded his assertions on what the tar sands mean to the Canadian economy, the question of national unity, the idea of not "pitting" one region against another. Nothing new, that's the standard stump speech whenever Ignatieff...

A happy Fourth of July to anyone from the U.S. of A. who happens to stumble across this page. Though I probably should have done the patriotic thing and posted something Canadian on my own country's birthday (July 1st - Canada Day), I was actually out enjoying the day in a pretty cool Canadian way: driving out from Calgary to the Royal Tyrell Museum of Paleontology - passing fields of canola and

CALGARY, Alberta, July 3 (UPI) -- Canada's annual Calgary Stampede got under way Friday as divorce consultants prepared for their own surge in unhappy couples after the 10-day event. Billed as the world's biggest outdoor rodeo event, the Alberta city goes into party mode, which Karen Stewart, founder of Fairway Divorce Solutions, told Sun Media leads to a lot of infidelity. It's the sexual undertones,...

Right-wingers have been having a bit of a time with a brash 22-year-old's Facebook comment, "F**k Canada Day." That raises a number of questions, for me at least. How many Facebook throwaway lines are coughed up by smart-ass university students? How many of them get noticed? Why did this one get noticed? Well, Omar Shaban is one of those Canadians with funny names . And he was, until a day...

One simple question, really, is enough to dispel the nonsensical claim by the Humane Society of Canada that the Calgary Stampede — the world’s greatest annual rodeo, and the quintessential cultural festival of the prairie provinces — is a “brutal, violent spectacle” that runs afoul of federal broadcasting regulations. The question is: “Compared to what? Bullfighting?”...
