Two quick thoughts before we all dive into our day: Tonight, as usual, I am scheduled to appear with John Frary on ESPN Radio out of St. Augustine . Please feel free to listen in by following the foregoing link and clicking on "Listen Live." I should be calling in around 7:15 p.m. this evening. The current issue of Scientific American Mind contains a blurb which I fear is relevant...

This a week after Mike Greenberg of ESPN Radio offered that he thought that the Ducks were one of the best teams in the country. The truth of the matter is that Stanford's head coach Jim Harbaugh (whose brother, John, coaches the Baltimore Ravens) is one of the best college coaches in the country. The Sporting News predicted at the outset of the season that he's the Pac-10 coach most...

According to Mike Golic this morning on ESPN Radio (quoting from the Elias Sports Bureau), since 1999 pitchers throwing on short rest in the post-season are 9-28. Since 2004, they are 0-7. Joe Girardi went to Northwestern and majored in engineering. He's a better math guy than I am. And Yankees fans are certainly hoping that he knows more than they do.

Apparently the haves are going to have some more bounty to plunder -- and soon. According to Buster Olney this morning on ESPN Radio, many big-league clubs are going to non-tender players who are arbitration eligible and let them become free agents. The reason -- the economy and their own economics. Smaller market teams probably won't be patient for a potential star to emerge and might...

... player approves). Rodney Harrison , currently of NBC's Football Night in America , talked with ESPN Radio earlier today, before the news of Chambers broke. He was on-air convincing Chicago Bears GM Jerry Angelo to make a run at Chambers. Well, Angelo may have made a claim - unfortunately for him the Chiefs are a higher priority on the list. Here's what Harrison, who played for the...

From Steve Popper : Larry Bowa, who has been a Phillies’ player and manager, as well as a coach for the Yankees, leveled a charge — a very detailed charge — on Philadelphia’s 950 ESPN radio that the reason the Yankees have worn a path to the mound isn’t confusion or to settle the pitcher, but to shift signs to deter what they believe is sign stealing being...

It seems Bill Walton’s broadcasting career will meet the same fate as his playing career. Walton, who joined ESPN in 2002 as an analyst, will not appear on telecasts for the World Wide Leader this season, due to injury. This time, as has been the case for the last few years, Walton’s debilitating back problems are precluding him from the rigors of the NBA season. Walton’s...

I was impressed this morning on ESPN radio to hear that network’s Ivan Maisel say he thought the Pac-10 is on a par with the SEC this season. That helps Oregon a bit because I’m afraid Colin Cowherd is correct when he says that around the country, when people see USC lose a conference game, [...]

Damn do those Saints look unbeatable or what? On Mike and Mike in the morning this morning on ESPN radio, they went through the balance of the Saints' 2009 schedule, and it's not exactly what you'd call tough. It's Carolina still twice, the Buccaneers still twice, the Rams and the Redskins for probably a damn near guaranteed six more wins right off the bat, bringing the Saints' win total...

According to Dave Eiland, who was interviewed on Ryan Ruocco’s 1050 ESPN radio show yesterday, CC Sabathia, AJ Burnett and Andy Pettitte all went into the manager’s office recently and told Joe they want the ball on short rest. Eiland said that they would consider that, along with how they look in their side sessions [...]
