How the West Failed Eastern Europe

An interesting and insightful article at Forbes' website. Most of it agrees with discussions I've had with my wife. I wish it were longer, and the fact that he says nothing about the war in Kosovo nor the financial collapse in Russia is disappointing, but it's a good start nevertheless.

Coupled with a more belligerent Russia, the former political leaders warn that a new generation of political leaders is emerging whose members didn’t experience [...]

Eastern Europe's economic woes: Down in the dumps

The ex-communist economies have not collapsed. But finding new ways to catch up with the West will be hard EVEN at the height of the ex-communist countries’ boom in 2006, almost half their citizens felt they lived worse than in 1989. Yet that glum verdict on 17 years of liberalisation, privatisation and stabilisation was tempered by another finding. Most of those polled by the World Bank and...

George Jonas: The ghosts of Eastern Europe

... knows who he is.” Electing communists isn’t the whole story, obviously. In 20 years Eastern Europe’s drab citadels of depression have turned into bright and vibrant cities. But in the bright, vibrant, post-communist streets, ex-communists routinely duke it out with neo-Nazis — for Nazis are making a comeback as well. Eastern Europe hasn’t laid its ghosts...

Someone Is Killing The Great Sue Bird Benefactors Of Eastern Europe

“You expect flamboyant wastefulness and outrageously shitty taste from Russian oligarchs,” wrote David Roth in this very space in March of 2008, “but Shabtai von Kalmanovic isn’t about show horses or dipping random things around his house in platinum or competitive jet-sailing or whatever it is that tacky ultra-billionaires do. He is more of [...]
