They say "tomayto"; we say "tomahto". They respond positively to smooth PR; our hackles rise at the same sales talk. They like to believe ballet dancers live the life of a Ralph Lauren photoshoot; we're reassured to see ours at work in holey tights.

Two images are in my mind as I start this review of Christof Loy’s Tristan und Isolde. The first is of Nina Stemme’s ecstatic Isolde, seated close by the slumped corpse of her lover yet utterly alone in the lovesick radiance of the Liebestod. The second is of a face blurred into hatred as its owner loudly booed Loy and his designers Johannes Leiacker and Olaf Winter only minutes later....

While it would be nice to believe that talent always rises to the top, the finger of fate is more capricious. You know how it goes. You see a person being lauded, or landing a great new job, and wonder what others see in them that you don't.

Forty years makes a ruby anniversary. That explains the presence of Balanchine's Rubies in this programme marking 40 years of Scottish Ballet. It's a birthday show, but very much a celebration of the company as directed by Ashley Page.
